Title

How Lived Experiences of COVID-19 Shape Mental Health: A Case Series of COVID-19 Patients from Wuhan, China

Abstract

Covid-19 had a negative impact on the mental health of patients who were admitted to the COVID ward.

Introduction

Research has found that patients with COVID-19 are more likely to have mental health concerns. Since there are limited knowledge on the psychological condition of individual pandemic patients, this study focuses on investigating COVID-19 patients’ narratives about the pandemic experiences and the effects on mental health.

Methods

This study was conducted via phone interviews of 27 Wuhan, China residents with different careers to learn about their experiences. The interviews were about 60 minutes long.

Case Presentation/Result

Case 1: She was admitted to the hospital with two other family members. She was anxious and scared that she would pass away so she wrote a will for her daughter.

Case 2: He is the husband of Subject 1. He suspects he was the source of the spreading of the virus in the family. He felt guilty and scared seeing his family suffer and constantly worried about the impact on his business.

Case 3: A 71-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital for COVID-19 and was hospitalized for 40 days. She became restless and isolated herself from

her friends.

Case 4: A 35-year-old man was admitted to the hospital where he started suffering from insomnia and constantly thought about how his son was infected because of him.

Case 5: A 34-year-old man was admitted to the hospital where he suffered from loneliness and depression and started valuing his family more since he missed them a lot.

Discussion

The case reports of five COVID-19 patients revealed a variety of psychological issues, including anxiety, irritation, sadness, guilt, and loneliness. Medical professionals should provide scientific knowledge, treatment plans, progress reports, and health status updates to patients, prescribe appropriate treatment and maintain regular contact with them.

Report 2

Title

Have we forgotten the non-COVID-19 diabetic patients? Impact of lockdown on daily life, sleep and mental health: cross-sectional study in Moroccan diabetic patients

Abstract

This study examined the effects of the lockdown on 100 Moroccan diabetic patients with average age of 48.

Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic is an anxious time period due to the fear of contamination and changes in daily activities. This impacted diabetic patients with changes in their sleep schedule, mental health, and daily activities.

Methods

This study was done by the Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases Department of the Ibn Rochd University Hospital of Casablanca during the lockdown in Morocco between June 1-10, 2020. The patients include diabetic type 2 over 18 years old and diabetic type 1 over 14 years. It was done by phone and they were asked a lot of personal questions about their background and lifestyle. The Anxiety and Depression Assessment Scale (HAD) test was done to find the psychological impact.

Results

The study involved 100 patients: 57 women and 43 men. Anxiety and depression was not significant due to the lockdown. However, 92% of the patients thought due to diabetes, they are more at risk of getting the disease.

Discussion

Sleep may have been a problem for a certain age group. 29% of the patients suffered from anxiety which may have been due to the lockdown.

Conclusion

Sleep and anxiety have a correlation. They were not affected much by diabetic patients during the lockdown.

Analysis

The reports I will be analyzing for lab report analysis are “How Lived Experiences of COVID-19 Shape Mental Health: A Case Series of COVID-19 Patients from Wuhan, China” and “Have we forgotten the non-COVID-19 diabetic patients? Impact of lockdown on daily life, sleep and mental health: cross-sectional study in Moroccan diabetic patients”. The reason I chose the reports is because of my interest in learning more about COVID-19 and the effects it had on mental health. The first report analyzes people from Wuhan, China who were infected by COVID-19 and the effects it had on their mental health. The second report analyzes Moroccan people with diabetes who did not get infected by COVID-19 and how the lockdown impacted their mental health.

The title of report 1 is very specific and easy to follow. The title of report 2 is also very specific, however, instead of a question, the title could have been written in one sentence. The word choice for both titles was well-written.

The abstract for report 1 includes the introduction, what the report will be analyzing, the methodthe result, and a conclusion. It was kept short and included all the information. The abstract for report 2 also included everything necessary, however, it included a lot of unnecessary details about the result section. It provided statistics that could be replaced with a short summary of the main idea of the result.

The introduction for report 1 gives a little background of the cause and why it’s important, previous research on this topic, and a brief explanation of the method. I think the hypothesis can be a little clearer but it is provided. The introduction for report 2 includes the importance of this research, previous research, and an overview of the method. It needs to include a hypothesis, but other than that, it was well-written.

The method and procedure for both report 1 and 2 include very specific details about the procedure and everything one needs to know about how the research is being conducted. It was very specific and easy to follow.

I really like how the result is presented for report 1. It is very specific and included a lot of details on the finding. I also like the result of report 2. It is broken down into different sections just as it was explained in the introduction.

The discussion for report 1 tied everything back from the introduction to the result. It gives an explanation for each finding and mentions other factors that might have impacted the result. The discussion for report 2 was again broken down into different categories which made it easy to follow. It was not very specific about the finding so that is something that can be improved.

There was no conclusion for report 1. I think the discussion for report 1 can be shortened and some of that information can be added to a conclusion. The conclusion for report 2 ties everything back and uses bullet points to highlight the findings.

Self-Reflection

The process of annotating and analyzing “How Lived Experiences of COVID-19 Shape Mental Health: A Case Series of COVID-19 Patients from Wuhan, China.” and “Have we forgotten the non-COVID-19 diabetic patients? Impact of lockdown on daily life, sleep and mental health: cross-sectional study in Moroccan diabetic patients.” was a good learning opportunity. I was able to thoroughly understand the importance of the eight elements of lab report. My lab report analysis consists of two reports related to COVID-19 and mental health. My paper begins with the simple curiosity to learn more about the effects of COVID-19 and lockdown on mental health. Some things that were easy for me to do during this piece was the annotation. I enjoyed reading the lab reports and the annotation came naturally to me. The analysis was also something I did not struggle with, however, I did not use any evidence to back up my analysis. I think I could have analyzed it more. Some things I struggled with was the APA format. I have used APA format before, however, I have never written a whole piece focusing on APA. I had to do a lot of research to make the paper APA format.
